Baja Fresh, La Salsa Fresh Acquired In $27M Deal

A few months after acquiring Kahala Brands, MTY Food Group is continuing to expand into the U.S. market. Last week, the Canadian firm unveiled an agreement to buy BF Acquisition Holdings, the owner of Baja Fresh Mexican Grill and La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill.

The Montreal-based operator will pay $27 million in cash for the company; the deal, announced September 9, is expected to close in the next 30 days. Baja Fresh currently has 162 stores, while La Salsa has 23 units. All but 16 of the combined 185 locations are franchised.

The acquisition follows MTY’s $300 million purchase of Kahala and its 18 brands, including Pinkberry, Cold Stone Creamery, and Taco Time. MTY operates 57 brands in the U.S. and Canada, including ManchuWok and Big Smoke Burger; that number will rise to 59 when the Baja Fresh and La Salsa deal is complete. Following the transaction, Baja Fresh’s headquarters will be moved to MTY’s office in Scottsdale, Ariz.
