Quite a bit is percolating with Energy Star and the E&S industry’s major stakeholders in the program.

  • Four equipment manufacturers were recognized as 2018 Energy Star awards winners at a ceremony earlier this month hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence: Hoshizaki America, ITW Food Equipment Group and Welbilt. Excellence-Product Design: True Food Service Equipment.
  • EPA and NAFEM are collaborating on Energy Star verification enhancement. The EPA recently agreed to explore expanding a NAFEM-driven pilot project that combines energy-efficiency verification and safety testing, eliminating the time and expense of separate, third-party testing. This approach, first recommended by NAFEM in 2011, was piloted successfully with steam cookers. An ad-hoc group of EPA representatives and NAFEM members is working to develop similar, audit templates in the hope of expanding the pilot to other product categories in the near future.

In addition, there are two Energy Star specification updates:

  • Commercial Coffee Brewers: Draft Version 1.1 was released for stakeholder review on February 22; the proposed revisions were discussed on March 1 at an EPA-hosted stakeholder webinar on March 1. Draft Version 1.1 materials are available on the Energy Star Commercial Coffee Brewers Version 1.1 product development website.
  • Commercial Dishwashers Version 3.0 specification revision, first launched in July 2017,   was issued an Update Memo in December that extended the comment and data submission deadline to February 28. The EPA is working to develop a Draft 1 Version 3.0 specification. And of course, next month Energy Star hosts its Commercial Food Service Stakeholder Workshop during the NRA Show in Chicago, May 20. The free event runs from 1-3 p.m.
